Effect of Lasiocarpine on Transcription in Liver Cells

Abstract

LASIOCARPINE, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid extracted from Heliotropium lasiocarpium and from Heliotropium europaeum, is well known for its hepatotoxicity1. Histological lesions induced by lasiocarpine are localized in the centrilobular zone of the liver2 as are those produced by other hepatotoxins such as dimethylnitrosamine3, cycasin4 and carbon tetrachloride5. Aflatoxin, a very potent hepatocarcinogen synthesized by Aspergillus flavus, on the other hand, induced morphological alterations in the periportal region of the lobule6.
