Abstract
IT has been suggested that the growth rate of organs during embryonic development and mitotic homeostasis in the mature animal are both regulated by the extracellular concentration of tissue-specific mitotic inhibitors or “antitemplates”1. There is evidence that such inhibitors, termed “chalones”, control the rate of cell division in epidermal cells2 and granulocytes3 of mature animals and we wish to show that similar substances can regulate the rate of mitosis in the rapidly dividing cells of embryonic organs.
