Abstract
MANY “psychoactive” drugs seem to influence monoamine metabolism in experimental animals. Such drugs have been suggested to act through their effects on monoamines in the central nervous system1. Bromide is a well known sedative although its mode of action remains uncertain. It has been suggested that the bromide ion interferes with synaptic transmission at cholinergic terminals2, but this has been disputed3. We have investigated the effect of bromide ions on release of other putative neurotransmitters—noradrenaline, serotonin and γ-aminobutyric acid.
