Correlations of ATPase Activity and ATP Levels with Structural Alterations in Rat Liver Mitochondria during Swelling

Abstract

IN 1954, Chappell and Perry1 observed that swelling of mitochondria was initiated by the demasking of a latent mitochondrial ATPase. Later Lehninger and his colleagues2 demonstrated that mitochondrial contraction was accompanied by a low ATPase level. The part played by the mitochondrial ATPase during swelling is, however, as yet unexplained.
