Concurrent Synthesis of Histone and Deoxyribonucleic Acid in Liver after Partial Hepatectomy

Abstract

SYNTHESIS of DNA and histone has been shown to be coupled in HeLa S-3 cells1 and in Euplotes eurystomus2. In contrast, the rise in the synthesis of liver histones after partial hepatectomy of the rat has been reported to begin several hours before DNA replication3–6. The discrepancy between the results with regenerating liver and HeLa cells seems to imply that a fundamental difference exists in the mechanisms which regulate histone synthesis in the two cells. For this reason, the temporal relationships of histone and DNA formation were re-examined in regenerating rat liver.
