Meiotic Chromosome Damage induced by LSD-25

Abstract

THE chromosome breaking potential of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) in human somatic cells has been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo1–7. The fact that similar cytogenetic damage is also observed in the leucocytes of infants exposed to the drug in utero suggests that the LSD can cross the placental barrier and enter the foetal circulation2,4,6,7. Skakkebaek et al.8 have demonstrated LSD induced damage in the meiotic chromosomes of mice. This communication describes experiments confirming meiotic aberrations in the germinal cells of mice injected with LSD and compares the effects of the drug on the chromosomes of various tissues over a relatively long time.
