Influence of Fatigue on Sleep

Abstract

FATIGUE is thought to influence the humoral factors which increase and decrease the sensitivity of the sleep control centres. We have studied the influence of somatic fatigue on sleep, especially paradoxical sleep, in seventeen adult male albino rats with chronically implanted electrodes. The rats were anaesthetized with ‘Nembutal’ (35 mg/kg intraperitoneally) and a pair of screw electrodes were placed on the skull, overlying the frontal and occipital cortices. The electromyograph (EMG) was recorded by surgical needles inserted into the neck muscles and the electrocardiogram (ECG) by a surgical needle electrode in a posterior paw, referred to the neck muscle. Respiration was recorded by a pneumographic method, using a short rubber tube filled with active charcoal. To record eye movement, two stainless steel electrodes fixed to a plastic plate were inserted into the eyeball from the outside of the orbit.
