Chemical Activation of Blood-clotting Factors and Thrombosis

Abstract

CERTAIN phenols accelerate the thrombin–fibrinogen interaction1 and aged solutions of di- and tri-hydroxy-benzenes shorten the blood-clotting time2. The intravenous injection of ellagic acid into dogs produces vascular thrombosis, when the circulation therein is rendered completely static3, possibly by activating blood factor XII. Furthermore, a polymer of phenylethylene (polystyrene) has a platelet-like activity in the test for the formation of thromboplastin4, and certain phenyl derivatives have multiple and complex effects on the stages of blood coagulation5. It is thus of interest to determine the blood-clotting factors which are chemically evolved (activated).
