Sodium and Potassium Transport in Normal and Mutant Yeasts: Inhibition by o-Phenanthroline

Abstract

MUTANT strains of micro-organisms have been employed by several workers in studies of membrane transport. Among others, Kolber and Stein1 employed mutants of Escherichia coli to investigate permease activity, and Reilly2 mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for electrolyte permeability studies. It was considered that the same method might be used with success in studying the energy relations of sodium and potassium transport in yeast.
