Histones in Prophase and their Possible Role in Nuclear Membrane Breakdown

Abstract

THERE is much interest in the histones in the context of the hypothesis that their biological function is to exert specific genetic repression in differentiated cells1–3. There is, however, evidence which does not support this hypothesis4,5 but which suggests that the histones could have a structural role in the organization of chromatin4.
