Inhibition of Platelet Aggregation by a Sulphonic Polysaccharide

Abstract

THE anticoagulant property of heparin is well known, but some of its other effects—such as lipolysis¹ and inhibition of platelet aggregation^2–6—are less definite. Some compounds of similar structure may possess more lipolytic and anti-aggregating activity and less anticoagulant effect than heparin, and these compounds could conceivably have clinical uses. We have investigated a sulphonic polysaccharide similar to heparin (Fig. 1) in structure, which has a marked fibrinolytic action^7,8 and little anticoagulant effect.
