Rhythmic Genetic Code of Ribonucleic Acid Bacteriophages

Abstract

SMALL bacteriophages which contain RNA and which specifically infect male Escherichia coli strains have been isolated in various places, as, for example, MS2 in Berkeley1, R17 in Philadelphia2 and M12 in Munich3. They are all serologically related4 and have similar amino-acid sequences in their coat proteins5. In each type the genetic information is carried by a single RNA chain with a molecular weight of 1.05–1.2 × 106 (refs. 6–9).
