Evidence for Collagen in a Fossil of the Lower Jurassic

Abstract

A WELL preserved specimen of Pholidophorus bechei Agassiz has been described from the Lower Lias of England1. The presence along its body axis of a conspicuous series of epineural intermuscular bones made it seem worth while to examine the microstructure of some endochondral bone of the head using the electron microscopic techniques recently developed for the investigation of fossil calcined tissues2–7. Preliminary results obtained with a specimen of this find are reported here.
