Sensitization of HeLa Cells containing 5-Bromodeoxyuridine to Ultra-violet Light at Different Stages of the Division Cycle

Abstract

THE halogenated analogues of thymidine have proved useful as radiation sensitizing agents, and have aided in the study of some of the basic problems of radiation biology, that is, those problems concerned with the role of DNA as a sensitive cellular target of radiation, both ionizing1,2 and ultra-violet3. Their mode of action has, however, yet to be fully explained. One unanswered question is the effect of continued growth after incorporation of the analogue has been terminated; does the stage of the division cycle, or the intervention of mitosis, influence the degree of sensitization brought about by a given degree of substitution of, for example, 5-bromo-deoxyuridine (BUdR) for thymidine ?
