Ecological Significance of Anthocyanins in the Seed Coats of the Phaseoleae

Abstract

THERE is a wide variation in the flavonoids of the seed coat of different cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris1. In ‘Canadian Wonder’, a cultivar which is grown widely both in temperate and tropical zones, we have found the quantities of anthocyanins shown in Table 1. Other cultivars contain these anthocyanins in different proportions, or the compounds may be absent, as in ‘Comtesse de Chamborde’ for example.
