Abstract
POST-IRRADIATION exposure of rats to the respiratory inhibitor carbon monoxide has been shown to reduce mortality1,2. On the cellular level, respiratory inhibitors (cyanide, high concentrations of nicotinamide) reduce or entirely prevent the usual post-irradiation loss of nuclear structure (pycnosis) when they are added to cultures of highly radiosensitive thymocytes after irradiation3. The purpose of this communication is to show that radiation-induced loss of nuclear structure in thymocytes can also be prevented by maintenance of aerobically irradiated cells in an anaerobic environment.
