Thermal Decomposition of Irradiated Orthorhombic Ammonium Perchlorate

Abstract

ISOTHERMAL decomposition kinetics of certain solids are markedly affected by previous exposure to ionizing radiation. The observed effects are usually interpreted as a change in the nuclei formation rate and, in the following stage, enhanced propagation of the reaction through the solid. For example, the effect of pre-irradiation by 1.2 and 1.3 MeV cobalt-60 gamma-rays on the subsequent thermal decomposition of the alkaline earth azides1, or the permanganates of sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and silver2, is to shorten the induction period and to accelerate the reaction. The solids studied so far all contain a metallic cation, thus it would be interesting to investigate the effect of pre-irradiation on compounds such as ammonium perchlorate which contain a non-metallic cation.
