Chondromucoprotein-degrading Enzymes

Abstract

THE chondroitin sulphate-protein complex of cartilage, chondromucoprotein1, is normally unable to diffuse out of the tissue, but can be released in a soluble form by severe mechanical disruption of the tissue1 or in vivo by chemical degradation, for example, by papain2. Other enzymes capable of degrading chondromucoprotein so that it may be lost from the intercellular matrix are present in lysosomes3, and these enzymes may play an important part in the pathological deterioration of cartilage. It seems probable that the lysosomal enzyme activity involved is of the acid protease type3,4, but hyaluronidase5,6 or xylosidase7 may also be implicated.
