Abstract
IN a particular series of experiments designed to determine ethanol consumption by the isolated perfused rat liver it was observed that consumption patterns differed from that obtained in the intact animal. The following experiments were conducted to show how normal consumption patterns can be obtained by changing the aeration media of the blood from the usual 95 per cent oxygen, 5 per cent carbon dioxide, to a mixture containing 18 per cent oxygen, 5 per cent carbon dioxide, and 77 per cent nitrogen.
