Abstract
GALACTOSE oxidase is an enzyme which oxidizes the primary alcohol group of galactose or galactosamine to an aldehyde1. The enzyme attacks not only free galactose but also terminal non-reducing galactose and galactosamine units when glycosidically linked. Detection of such units in mucopolysaccharides and mucoproteins produced by mucus-secreting cells can be accomplished by staining the aldehyde produced with Schiff's reagent.
