Role of Reduced Glutathione in Human Erythrocytes

Abstract

THERE has been a recent trend towards the view that Heinz body anaemias simply represent an acceleration of normal red cell ageing, resulting from catalysis by aromatic haemolysins of the destruction of cellular components by molecular oxygen carried by the cell1,2. Evidence is also available to indicate that reduced glutathione (GSH) buffers the erythrocyte against this haemolytic process3–7. Paradoxically, Jacob and Jandl have shown that erythrocyte destruction, both in vitro8 and in vivo9, may be achieved by blockade solely of surface sulphydryl groups.
