Abstract
ANTIBODIES capable of reacting with thermally denatured DNA can be elicited by immunization with antigens prepared by coupling purine and pyrimidine derivatives to proteins1–3. In this way antibodies specific for the purinoyl moiety1, for 5-acetyluracil2 and for the five major bases3 of DNA and RNA have recently been produced. Their reaction with thermally denatured DNA was demonstrated by means of a quantitative complement-fixation test, but initial attempts to obtain precipitation reactions with them were unsuccessful. We now offer evidence that precipitation reactions can occur between purine- and pyrimidine-specific antibodies and denatured DNA.
