Mechanism of Apical Dominance in Plants

Abstract

THE phenomenon of apical dominance in plants has been the subject of considerable research over the past thirty years (reviewed by Audus1), yet there is still no general agreement as to the nature of the mechanism involved. Much of the work on this problem has been based on the assumption that the inhibiting influence of the apex is mediated either directly or indirectly by auxin. There is, however, considerable evidence that nutritional factors are also involved and that the expression of apical dominance is at least partly determined by the nutritional status of the plant.
