Action of Glycosidases and Periodate on Guinea Pig Serum Glycoproteins

Abstract

THIS work forms part of an investigation on an acidic glycoprotein-containing α-globulin fraction, Fraction I, which has been isolated from guinea pig serum by means of chromatography with carboxymethyl cellulose. The physical and immunological characteristics and carbohydrate composition of this fraction have been investigated1. A large part of it is made up of a number of components with very similar physical properties and which are difficult to resolve. The carbohydrate content is about 19 per cent; sialic acid, galactose, mannose and hexosamine occur in a molar ratio of approximately 0.8 : 1.0 : 1.0 : 1.4. Most or all of the sialic acid residues occupy terminal positions of oligosaccharide chains. This communication describes work on the structure of the carbohydrate prosthetic groups.
