Abstract
A RECENT investigation1 on the free amino-acids in some forest plants has revealed that in ligneous forest plants tyrosine makes up a large part of the free amino-acids. Shikimic acid, a common precursor of aromatic amino-acids and of lignin, was detected in measurable amounts only in the plants containing large amounts of free tyrosine in their leaves. From these results, interpreted in the light of investigations carried out by Bradfute and McLaren2, Flaig3, and Winter4, it was postulated that apart from being important to plant growth itself tyrosine may play a specific part in the resistance to frost of young shoots. The present investigation was carried out to test this hypothesis.
