Abstract
HUMAN hæmoglobin is a weak antigen1–4 but potentially antigenic sites may be concealed in the interior of the folded molecule. In contrast, the isolated polypeptide chains may have little conformational rigidity, and in these, therefore, antigenic sites may be more accessible. Accordingly, we have investigated the antigenic properties of the separate α- and β-chains of human globin and have used two immunological assay systems that allow an examination of specificity.
