Determination of Activity and Activity Coefficients of Potassium and Sodium Ions in Frog Muscle Fibres

Abstract

FOR precise calculation of the potential difference on a cell membrane, ion activities rather than concentrations should be used. If one considers the fact that the main part of cytoplasm is a poly-electrolyte solution one can expect to find significant difference in the activity coefficients for sodium and potassium ions inside the cells as compared with that of the chloride solution outside. Such a difference in values of activity coefficient was shown for sodium DNA solution and some other polymer solutions in vitro1–3.
