Inhibitory Action of Adenine, Adenine Nucleosides and Nucleotides on the Biosynthesis of Porphyrins by Rhodopseudomonas spheroides

Abstract

OUR earlier investigations have shown that adenosine-5-monophosphoric acid (AMP) exerts a strong inhibitory action on excess porphyrin formation in rats with experimental porphyria1,2 or in lead-poisoned rabbits3 as well as in vitro during incubation of reticulocytes or liver homogenates of rabbits with glycine4. Rimington has also observed this effect of AMP in the porphyria induced in rats by hexachlorobenzene5. To obtain further results concerning this inhibition, we have investigated the effect of adenine, adenine nucleosides and nucleotides on the biosynthesis of porphyrins by Rhodopseudomonas spheroïdes. As it is known, this micro-organism synthesizes, in semi-anaerobic conditions and in the light, porphyrins (and bacteriochlorophyll) through the same biochemical mechanism as animal cells.
