Soluble Components of the Cambial Zone of Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell.

Abstract

SEVERAL investigators have shown that the nutrient fluids in the phloem and, in some instances, the liquors in the cambium of arborescent gymnosperms and angiosperms contain some of the following constituents1: mono-saccharides, chiefly glucose and fructose with traces of pentoses (mainly xylose); uronic acids, sorbitol and mannitol; disaccharides, chiefly sucrose; trisaccharides, including raffinose and 1F-β-fructosylsucrose; higher oligosaccharides such as stachyose and verbascose; phenolic glycosides; oxalic, succinic, citric and lactic acids; amino-acids and peptides; inorganic salts; etc.
