Polarizability Theories of Polynucleotide Hypochromism

Abstract

Bolton and Weiss have recently given1 expressions for the decrease in optical absorption (hypochromism) of a classical oscillator caused by the polarizability of identical neighbouring oscillators, and suggest their theory explains the hypochromism of helical polynucleotides. Their result is surprising, since it violates the sum rule for oscillator strengths.
