Abstract
CELL-FREE extracts of Phycomyces blakesleeanus incorporate farnesol pyrophosphate labelled with carbon-14 into non-saponifiable lipids. Separation of these compounds on magnesium oxide-‘Hyflo-Supercel’ columns demonstrate that the carbon-14 is associated with crystalline β-carotene, purified ergosterol and fractions containing phytoene, phytofluene and lycopene. It has been reported several times that a great portion of the activity associated with the non-saponifiable compounds is lost on recrystallization1. As a consequence, the separated saturated fractions in this experiment are indicative only.
