Abstract
WE have attempted to improve the discrimination between α-tracks and γ-background in Ilford 50μ nuclear emulsions by utilizing the Herschel effect1. The Ilford emulsions being sensitive to infra-red, direct application of the Herschel effect resulted only in a blackening of the emulsions. Therefore a desensitizer was necessary ; phenosafranine was chosen2. The emulsions were treated in the following way :
