Abstract
WE have previously suggested that agents known to inhibit cell division might be effective ovicides in mammals, in amounts which are non-toxic to the pregnant female1. We have reported on a few such agents, and our results in general supported the hypothesis that it might be possible to separate the effects on the ovum and on the maternal organism2. Since that time, we have examined a number of other substances, and in this communication we wish to direct attention to one of these in particular. This substance, 6-azauridine (2-ribofuranosyl-as-triazine-3, 5(2H,4H-dione) (‘AzUR’), is so far the one which most closely approaches our aim of finding an oral agent which might control human pregnancy, with minimal toxic effects.
