Abstract
THE compounds1,2 of pyridine with metal salts have been well investigated, but little has been reported concerning the corresponding pyrazine (Fig. 1) compounds. Pyrazines have a second (potential) donor nitrogen atom in the 4 position and are much weaker3 bases than the pyridines. (Pyrazine pKa=1.1 ; cƒ. pyridine pKa = 5.2.) It appears to attach a proton, or to quaternize at one nitrogen atom only, the second being deactivated4. Condensed pyrazines, for example phenazine5, have been studied, but only two simple pyrazine complexes, namely, tetracarbonyl-bis(methylpyrazine)-chromium(O) and the corresponding molybdenum(O) compound, appear to have been reported6.
