Antigenic Structure of Non-Infectious Adenovirus Materials

Abstract

HELA cells infected with adenovirus type 5 produce, in addition to virus particles, three non-infectious materials previously named antigens A, B and C 1. These antigens can be separated by electrophoresis1 and by chromatography on diethylaminoethyl cellulose columns2. Antigen B corresponds to the protein factor responsible for the early cytcopathic action of adenoviruses in HeLa cell cultures3,4 and possibly also to the cell-detaching factor described by Rowe et al. 5. Antigens A and C, but not antigen B, contain deoxyribonucleic acid6. A comparison of these three antigens by gel-diffusion precipitation tests revealed a partial identity of antigens B and C and absence of antigenic relationship of either of these two materials with antigen A 2.
