Abstract
THE biological behaviour of the rare earths has recently become a question of increasing importance1. Early recognition of the prominent occurrence of several of these elements in fission products2 stimulated a wide scope of distribution studies in animals and, to a limited extent, in man. Yet, we could find among these studies no mention of a specific biochemical or histological effect except for a brief communication from this laboratory on fatty liver degeneration3 and some earlier reports on rare earths as anticoagulants4.
