Abstract
HAPTOGLOBINS are globulins present in normal human plasma which are capable of combining and carrying hæmoglobin. First detected by Polonovsky and Jayle1 in 1938, they became the object of detailed studies, mainly by French authors2. Smithies3, in 1955, studying normal human serum by zone electrophoresis in a starch gel supporting medium, showed that it was possible to differentiate three groups easily when a certain amount of hæmoglobin was added to the serum. It was later demonstrated that this polymorphism was based on electrophoretic differences in the haptoglobins4.
