Abstract
ALTHOUGH Pellia epiphylla (L.) Corda is frequently studied as an example of a liverwort, details of its mode of spore formation do not appear to be widely known. Many text-book descriptions of the process are inadequate, despite the comprehensive account of Hofmeister1 and the fact that several interesting features of spore development can be readily demonstrated by examination of sporophytes at appropriate stages.
