Abstract
THE amplitude of transverse oscillations in a synchrotron due to gas scattering and spread at injection can be much reduced by using the strong-focusing principle1. In such a machine the oscillation amplitude is reduced in comparison with a conventional machine by a factor of order 0.4√n, where n is the field index (−r0/H0.dH/dr). Oscillations induced by magnet misalignments are, however, larger in the strong-focusing machine by a factor of order 2√n. This suggests that very accurate magnet assembly will be required.
