Abstract
THE occurrence of myoglobin in fish muscle has been postulated by several authors1,2; but no clear evidence for it has been given so far. A red muscular region made of cells rich in sarcoplasm3 exists, however, in many teleosts underneath the skin; its width is greatest at the level of the lateral line and decreases progressively dorsally and ventrally4 (Musculus lateralis superficialis Trunci).
