Abstract
IT has been shown previously that the mammary gland of goats and cows absorbs glucose from the blood-stream during lactation, and also that lactose is formed when slices of the mammary glands of guinea pigs are incubated with glucose1,2. But it has never before been proved conclusively that glucose, which is taken from the blood-stream by the mammary gland, is used for the synthesis of lactose. The aim of the work described here was to prove this point, and to gain some information about the mechanism of the conversion of glucose to galactose within the mammary gland.
