Evidence from Infra-Red Spectroscopy for the Composition of Certain Polysaccharides

Abstract

PREVIOUS infra-red spectral measurements of polysaccharides have been mainly concerned with cellulose and its derivatives1–6. Differences in hydrogen bonding in these materials have been deduced from differences in their spectra at 3 µ4,6 and 6 µ2, and the products of their oxidation have been investigated, the new bands produced being assigned to specific groups1,4,5. Chitin and the related chitosan and chitin nitrate have also been studied7, and in this case evidence as to chain structure and inter-chain bonding has been obtained.
