Abstract
THE fact that surface oxide films increase the resistance to plastic deformation of mono-crystals of cadmium and zinc is well known from the work of Roscoe1, Andrade2, Harper and Cottrell3 and others. The type of deformation which these authors observed to be affected by surface oxidation was slip along the basal planes of the mono-crystals. I have recently observed that twinning in zinc mono-crystals is also influenced by a surface film. In this case the film consists of electrodeposited copper.
