Abstract
CONVENTIONAL low-frequency delay lines, built from capacitors and iron-cored inductors, show both linear and non-linear distortion. The linear distortion gives rise to dispersion, since the time delay depends on frequency. It is only possible to realize a time delay that is approximately constant over a limited frequency range1–3. The non-linear distortion is due to the iron-cored inductors. Only for signals that are sufficiently small is this distortion negligible. So the iron limits the allowable energy-level.
