O—H Absorption in Chelate Compounds

Abstract

IT is well known that many benzenoid compounds containing a COOH- or OH-group ortho to another group capable of forming an internal hydrogen bond do not exhibit the normal OH-band found in simple unassociated hydroxylic bodies. The nature of the OH-absorption in intramolecularly bonded substances has never been clearly demonstrated, although some isolated examples of interest have been given1–5. It is the purpose of the present communication to provide general ideas regarding the OH-absorption of some chelate bodies, based on new data, and also to point out a certain similarity with the double COOH- ring found in associated acids.
