Abstract
THE simplest carotenoid is lycopene, C40H56; on complete hydrogenation to perhydrolycopene, C40H82, thirteen bonds disappear. Quantitative degradation by means of ozone, permanganate and chromic acid as oxidizing agents leads to the formula:
