Measurement of the Amount of Steam Escaping from Areas of Volcanic of Solfataric Activity

Abstract

ON the slopes of Mt. Tongariro in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, there is a remarkable area of solfataric activity called Ketetahi Hot Springs. One of the most noteworthy features is the column of steam arising from the vigorous fumaroles of this area. This column of steam has been noted by Hochstetter1, who gave a drawing of the volcanic peaks from Ongarue, 36 miles away, and in this the column was clearly shown. Thomas2 stated that it was visible for fifty miles, and although it has not been possible to check this, the statement is probably still correct in favourable circumstances.
