Abstract
M. HASSELBLATT1 has measured the maximum linear tangential swelling of birch wood in a number of different liquids. An analysis of his results shows that they appear to fit the relation where s is the swelling measured as an extension per unit length ; a is a constant of proportionality ; Σ is the dielectric constant (or S.I.C.) of the liquid in which the wood is swollen.
