Abstract
DR. A. G. NORMAN has done a real service to an increasing number of research workers by putting together the literature relating to the very complex group of compounds which constitute the cell wall of plants. The field is a developing one of scientific interest and technical importance, the established facts are few and somewhat scattered, whilst the literature retains much that is unsound. He is not afraid to give a lead at times in being both critical and trying to give the right perspective: in our opinion the book forms a platform from which future work can be initiated on sounder lines than in the past, and as such should be widely and carefully read.
