December 4, 1827.—Though the Admiralty had possessed steamboat m 1822, the first commissions for the 9omm team vsls ever granted to naval c4fj we e thps by the Duke of Clarence, te-Lord glr r 11fl, on Dec. 4, 1827, when H.M.S.S. Meteor, and Echo were commissioned by L ut . Evans, Bullock, and Hay, respectively. This o cial recognition of steam vessels as auxiliary warships may be said to mark the birth of the steam Navy of Great Britain.
